For centuries, nomadic Kazakh communities have expressed their identity through intricate hand-embroidered wall hangings known as Tuskiiz (түскиіз). These richly decorated tapestries were traditionally displayed inside yurts, serving both as functional home décor and as symbolic works of art that carried deep cultural meaning.

Each handcrafted piece often stretched up to two meters in length, featuring an unfinished edge — a poetic reminder of life’s beautiful imperfection. Embroidered by hand over many months, these works are a testament to patience, skill, and intergenerational artistry.

A Legacy of Craftsmanship

For generations, Kazakh women meticulously embroidered these textiles, often working late into the night by candlelight. Their creations weren’t merely decorative — they were cultural heirlooms. Upon completion, they were gifted to loved ones or proudly displayed, symbolizing honor, tradition, and love.

Growing up as a nomadic Kazakh in western Mongolia, I witnessed my grandmother and the elder women of our community bring these patterns to life with extraordinary care. Their hands told stories — of resilience, heritage, and identity. But with time, this craft became less practiced, leaving many of these ethnic Central Asian designs under-represented and at risk of fading away.

Honoring the Past — Designing for the Future

What began as a mission to preserve original handcrafted textiles has grown into something much more vibrant: a modern design brand inspired by the traditional nomadic artistry of Central Asia.

Today, through Asylana, we curate and protect a collection of authentic vintage pieces — some dating back to the 1890s — while reimagining their patterns in contemporary lifestyle products. From minimalist home décor to elegant everyday essentials, our creations carry timeless nomadic motifs into the modern world.

Cultural Revival Through Modern Design

Our vision is to bridge cultural heritage and modern aesthetics, bringing centuries-old artistic traditions into daily life. We believe that these patterns are not relics of the past, but living designs that can inspire the present and future.

Every product we create tells a story — of artisans, ancestors, and the enduring beauty of Kazakh and Central Asian ethnic design.

Sincerely,

Marina Khashat
